Description

"The Rock with Wings" captures the majestic Ship Rock, located in New Mexico. Known to the Navajo as Tsé Bitʼaʼí, Ship Rock is a sacred monadnock that rises nearly 1,600 feet above the high-desert plain. There's an interesting legend behind this ancient volcanic formation. In Navajo culture, the site is revered and it is said to be the remains of a great bird that carried their ancestors to safety.

I took this photo in December of 2019 - during my first trip to New Mexico. I can still recall the sense of wonder I had looking at this thing. The structure can't be missed - it juts out apparently from nowhere, with its towering spires and rugged formations resembling the wings of a great bird. "The Rock With Wings" is meant to evoke the mystical essence of this landmark and the timeless legend it carries.
